Keeping Your Dog Cool During Summer

Dogs love being outside. There's plenty to explore, plenty to smell, plenty to bark at. Plus, they've got to make sure the yard is still theirs and not some foreign intruder's! Many owners love letting their dogs run around in the yard and explore during the day. Exercise and time spent outside is crucial to a dog's health and longevity, along with socialization with other people and animals.

With summer months coming up and an already quickly approaching warm spring for southern US states, it's important to make sure your dog can play outside and not worry about overheating. Dogs cool down by panting and vasodilation in the ears and face. Vasodilation is basically when blood vessels expand and get closer to the skin, allowing heat to exchange with the environment easier. One of the best ways to cool down is therefore water! Splashing in water is incredibly useful for quick cooling, and one of the beloved ways dogs love to cool down. Drinking water helps keep them hydrated while their body is working hard to cool down.

Here are a few things to make sure your dog is cool during warm days outside:

  1. Provide plenty of drinking water
  2. Provide an adequate area of shade to escape direct sun
  3. Restricting time outside during midday
  4. Give them frozen treats to play with outside (frozen peanut butter is great)

As always, you can check out one of our products that could help with providing plenty of drinking water. We sell three automatic waterers for outdoor use that are made in the USA and hook up easily to a simple garden hose. You can check them out here.

Our simplest and most popular option is the Aqua Buddy. So make sure to check it out.
